Geeks Can Rule the World at Last
I’m a Geek. I’m not ashamed. I started programming on one of the first personal computers ever invented. It still used cartridges and had a single 5.25” floppy disk drive (before hard drives and mice). I was driven to start a company and be a huge success. Well it took me a lot of failures, and I mean a lot before I found a modicum of success on my own. So like most people I took jobs in other companies and eventually moved out into independent consulting. Finally, with a lot of experience under my belt, I started a new technology company.
Over seven years we saw our share of ups and downs, riding the currents of the technology boom, never really sure what the next day would bring. We tried various things, and while we did enjoy success, I felt like a swimmer caught in a riptide. My fate was not entirely in my hands, it was a large part luck and random chance. I could try to swim out of the tide, but the next time I might just get caught again.
So I sold the company and got out of the technology arena for some time. I started new businesses outside of technology, wrote books, and finally began to learn what I’d been missing all along. I had been so deeply entrenched in the industry that I made mistakes that were extremely common to technical professionals.
I studied businesses that succeed and those that don’t. I looked at how technical entrepreneurs ran their businesses and came to some enlightening conclusions. The vast majority of technical professionals running their own businesses were making the same mistakes I was, limiting their businesses to mere marginal results.
When I understood this and my own mistakes I was so frustrated I wanted to kick myself. Instead I decided to create a program to help the Geeks of the world, like myself, get past these common problems and take the path toward super-success.
